An Actor-Network Investigation of the XSEDE Project
This NSF-funded research project investigates the social and organizational dynamics of XSEDE (eXtreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment), the largest NSF-funded cyberinfrastructure support initiative. Using Actor-Network Theory (ANT), the study examines the interplay between people, technologies, and organizational structures that made XSEDE a cohesive and impactful cyberinfrastructure project.
Spanning from September 2021 to November 2024, the research focuses on understanding what motivated participation in XSEDE, how the project balanced collaboration and competition, and the strategies used to unify its diverse components into a single, effective organization. Through two rounds of interviews with leadership, stakeholders, and staff, the study captures key insights into the project’s successes and areas for improvement.
